N-Butyraldehyde

n-Butyraldehyde is colorless transparent liquid with asphyxiating pungent odor, combustible. Slightly soluble in water, miscible with ethanol, ether, acetone, toluene, ethyl acetate, oil and other organic solvents. It has an irritating effect on respiratory mucosa.

Usage

N-butyraldehyde is an important organic intermediate. Hydrogenation of n-butyraldehyde can be produced n-butanol; condensation and dehydration and then hydrogenation can be produced 2-ethylhexanol; n-butanol and 2-ethylhexanol is the main raw material for plasticizers. Oxidation of n-butyraldehyde can produce n-butyric acid; condensation with formaldehyde can produce trimethylolpropane, which is the plasticizer of synthetic alkyd resin and the raw material of air-drying oil; condensate with various alcohols to make celluloid, resins, rubbers and solvents for pharmaceutical products.

Storage

n-Butyraldehyde is easy to oxidize, should avoid contact with air, stored under nitrogen protection. Store in a ventilated, low-temperature and dry room; separate from oxidizers and acids, and store and transport according to the regulations of flammable chemicals.
