Globally, the largest coal-to-chemicals project under construction is accelerating its progress.
On September 20, Shaanxi News Broadcast aired the report titled "Shaanxi Coal Group Yulin Chemical: Phase I of Phase II, the World's Largest Under-construction Coal-to-Chemicals Project, Accelerates Progress." The 15-million-ton-per-year coal quality-based clean and efficient conversion demonstration project—olefins, aromatics, and advanced processing facilities—at Shaanxi Coal Group Yulin Chemical builds upon the foundation of the first-phase project. By integrating advanced technologies such as coal pyrolysis, coal/semi-coke gasification, and downstream deep-processing systems, the project further expands and extends the industrial chain, exploring a new pathway for the coupled development of coal-to-olefins and coal-to-aromatics. This initiative aims to produce four key high-value-added product categories: high-performance materials, battery electrolyte solvents, biodegradable materials, and specialty oil products. Ultimately, the project will yield a range of chemical products, including polyolefins, polyesters, polycarbonates, polyether polyols, EVA, POE, SAP, DMC, DEC, EMC, and EC, thereby driving the coal-to-chemicals industry toward higher-end, diversified, and low-carbon development. Following the principle of "overall planning with phased implementation," the second-phase project is divided into Phase I and subsequent phases. Phase I of the second phase covers an area of approximately 9,200 mu, with an estimated total investment of about 62 billion yuan. The project will utilize nine 3,500-ton-class aerospace furnaces for coal gasification, primarily constructing facilities capable of producing 5.6 million tons/year of coal-to-methanol, 1.48 million tons/year of methanol-to-olefins, and associated downstream deep-processing units. These facilities will manufacture eight major product categories, including polyethylene, polypropylene, EVA, and SAP, with a combined annual output of 2.77 million tons.
